Prophylaxis refers to the periodic cleaning of the teeth by a licensed dental health professional. Prophylaxis is a preventative measure against gum disease and tooth decay. During this time patient education is given by the hygienist or dentist on proper brushing, flossing, and home oral health care.
Patients receive a comprehensive oral evaluation during their visit with a dentist. The dentist can evaluate the patient for gum disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer, and overall oral health. The dentist can then discuss his/her findings with the patient or the patient’s parent/guardian.
Sealants are plastic coatings that are placed in the pits and grooves on the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent caries by giving a smoother and easier surface to brush.
